Its automatic operation and overdrive gear make it suitable for vehicles that are regularly driven on both city streets and highways. The Ford AOD transmission was developed to combine traditional automatic transmission operation with the benefits of an overdrive gear. This design allows drivers to enjoy comfortable highway cruising without requiring extremely high engine RPMs. As a result, the transmission has gained attention among classic Ford owners and builders.
