One of football's most prestigious individual awards is awarded to players with a lasting legacy in the sport. The super ballon dor is a special footballer of the year accolade that is so unique it has only been handed out once. France Football created this unique football award in 1989 to acknowledge the best football player of the last thirty years and Alfredo Di Stéfano was presented with the trophy on 24 December 1989 after being recognised for his illustrious career and for playing at international level.
Football fans, the judges from France Football and ex-Ballon d'Or winners took part in the voting. Di Stéfano was far ahead of Johan Cruyff and Michel Platini, the other football players who played in similar era. Most importantly, his playing skills with Real Madrid were well known; the club managed to win five tournament European Cup titles for consecutive years, from 1956 to 1960. He also won regular Ballon d'Or award in 1957 and 1959. Unlike the main award, this special trophy had been replaced by different one each year. Given the one-of-a-kind story behind, it is certainly a compelling one for football fans interested in comparing between legends.
